Apply Advanced First Aid - HLTFA402B

The Apply First Aid course / module provides the participant with basic knowledge and skills to deal with many First Aid emergencies and builds upon the basics to provide a higher standard of treatment using oxygen equipment, analgesic gases and immobilization devices. It also builds upon the principles of team work and coordinating a casualty scene.

The prerequisite for this course / module is Apply First Aid - HLTFA301B .

Some of the outcomes and skills include:

Scene assessment
Basic Chain of Survival
Primary assessment of the casualty for consciousness, airway, breathing, bleeding
Recognition of the unconscious casualty
Basic airway management and maneuvers
Basic resuscitation techniques
Demonstration of the Semi-Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
Techniques dealing with:
            Shock
            Breathing difficulties
            Traumatic injuries
            Common medical illnesses
            Allergic reactions
            Envenomation by common creatures
            Use of oxygen equipment
            Maintenance of oxygen equipment
            Use of a Bag Valve Mask resuscitator
Use of an Oropharyngeal Airway
Use of suction equipment
Spinal immobilization techniques
Use of analgesic gases – eg. Penthrox
Introduction to diagnostic tools – B. P. cuff, thermometers, pulse oximetry
            Legal obligations when providing first aid treatment
            Recording information and calling for further medical assistance

 

This course / module involves a formal examination process.

 

The course is conducted over a minimum period of 3 days, and on completion, the participants must demonstrate effective basic resuscitation techniques and the application of a Semi-Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) to be awarded the certificate.

Validation period

Successful participants will receive a nationally recognized certificate which is valid for a period of 3 yrs from the date of issue.
